It's a commonly held misconception that you have to already be flexible to do yoga. In fact, the opposite is true: doing yoga regularly is a sure way to become more flexible.
The stretching you do in yoga is a great way to improve your flexibility. In yoga, flexibility is an attitude that invests and transforms the mind as well as the body.

Week 1: Shoulder Flexibility Days 1 to 6.
Week 2: Back Flexibility (backbend poses) days 8 to 13.

Na habt ihr die 3-Minutenchallenge mitgeübt???🧘‍️

Was habt ihr gespürt, oder auch nicht gespürt? Welche Erwartungen hattet ihr?

Heute gibt es die lang versprochene Erklärung der Wirkung von yin yoga.
.
Dabei geht es anders als im dynamischen aktiven Yoga viel mehr darum zu Spüren, Loszulassen und zu Dehnen.
Die vordergründig sitzenden und liegenden Asanas werden dabei zwischen 3 und 10 Minuten passiv gehalten.
.
Warum?
.
Um deinen Muskeln Zeit zu geben locker zu lassen. Da unsere Muskulatur im Alltag doch immer wieder unter Vollspannung steht, braucht es zum Loslassen ca. 2 Minuten.
.
Durch yin yoga erreichen wir dadurch tiefe Muskulatur, Bindegewebe und Faszien, die dynamisches Yoga nicht oder nur bedingt erreichen.
.
Die Faszienarbeit hat den großen Vorteil, dass sich Blockaden und Verklebungen lösen können und dadurch mehr Bewegungsfreiheit entsteht.

First yoga video in the new apartment. I’m slowly settling into new routines and new versions of new routines. I’m grateful to have finally found a quiet, comfortable space that I can call mine. I’m grateful for the close proximity to the river and beautiful parks. I’m grateful for slow mornings where I can make coffee, hang out with my girl and do some yoga before work. There has been major stress and anxiety and loneliness in the last couple weeks, I chose to focus on the good things in this new version of reality instead. This is a snippet of my home practice from earlier today after I took Ginger for a 6 km walk (I’m already at 9,500 steps and it’s 1 pm). I postponed the start date of my Thursday evening Yoga series until next week, it’s only $59 to get into the six weeks of classes! So if you want to register let me know ASAP! First nail the basics of down dog pose, then get creative and play. So, feet should be hip distance and hands shoulder distance apart. Heels should be down on the ground, if knees must be bent to meet that goal, NBD. If you need to pedal your feet and wriggle around to loosen up first, go for it. For the torso, picture yourself getting as close to your thighs as possible. Finally, loosen up that tension in the jaw and let your head hang relaxed. Got it? Good. Now let's play with some variations.

The yoga word “samadhi” was first described to me like this. And I’ve never forgotten it...

Imagine you’re looking out at a sunset - from the top of a mountain you’ve hiked up, on the shore of a big lake or off the dock of your cottage.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You’re sitting there in silence, staring out at the sky as it fills with deep colour and warm light.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Nothing else crosses your mind. You’re totally focused on the beauty of that sunset as it touches everything around you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s then that, for a moment, you lose your sense of self. You become a part of the sunset.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
That’s when you’ve reached it. Samadhi (in Sanskrit) - the goal of yoga, oneness with the universe.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
When I heard that described, my heart melted. Because I’ve had that experience before - on the tops of mountains, on the edge of lakes, in the depths of the forest.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
And it transforms you.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So a big part of my yoga practice is heading out into nature, chasing those moments of total absorption.

The class was originally rooftop but once the storm hit, we needed to adjust, and we still we got a lovely view Adjusting, modifying, accommodating is what life is constantly asking us to do. Life probes, pokes, and picks at us in different ways, through different life experiences by way of completely different people. And doesn’t stop until we finally see what needs to be changed. 
Sometimes things can be so apparent to me in order to make those moves but more often then not my ego gets in the way and I’ve kept forcing “my way, my outcome”, while the Universe is screaming at me to do something different. I’ve found that when I’m stuck on an outcome, it helps me to reach out and talk to friends, loved ones. That quick perspective change can be so profound, like an aha moment. And at the same time knowing that their comments and suggestions are their own, and I don’t have to necessarily connect to them. After doing this, I also notice that I need to slow myself down and see what resonates with ME. So this last bit is huge. I am practicing on finding stillness after all the noise and using my inner guidance to what and how I shall proceed.

The stretching you do in yoga is a great way to improve your flexibility. In yoga, flexibility is an attitude that invests and transforms the mind as well as the body.

Week 1: Shoulder Flexibility Days 1 to 6.
Week 2: Back Flexibility (backbend poses) days 8 to 13.

One of the first things you will learn in a yoga class (and often in the physical therapists office) is the importance of moving the spine in different directions.

Here’s a tutorial on how to stretch the side body by moving the spine laterally. This video shows you how to fold and sit on a blanket to begin. This variation may be more accessible than being on hands and knees (tabletop/quadraped) if weight bearing is hard on those joints.

The key is to find a blanket fold that works for your body. I will continue to show you different ways to fold the blanket (see previous post) and also how to sit on a block if the hips and/or knees feel any discomfort in the seated position. You can also do this stretch on a chair.

Here are a few things to keep in mind:

Try to stay in the side plane during this movement. There is a tendency to lean forward with the lifted arm.

Keep both sitting bones grounded during the side stretch. You don’t want to feel like you are toppling way over to the side.

Notice the shoulder of the bottom arm. You want this to stay relaxed and not shrug up to your ear lobe.

Crescent Pose – Anjaneyasana 
Stretches the legs, groin, and hip flexors, while also opening the front torso, chest, and shoulders. It strengthens and tones the thighs, hips, and butt, while the balancing aspect helps to develop flexible stability. 
From Downward Dog, bring your right foot forward between your hands into a lunge position. Lower your left knee down to the mat. Find balance and stability, and start to left your torso into an upright position. Extend your arms up toward the sky, adding in a slight backbend if your body allows. You’re your hip down toward the floor. Keep your arms in line with your ears and gaze upward. Hold for 2-3 breaths, and exhale, bring your hands back down to frame your right foot. Press yourself back up into downward facing dog, and repeat on the left side.

Let's talk about twisting. Specifically where tucking the elbow to the outside of a knee is offered as an option. First of all, to review, every pose is about creating space and length somewhere in the body--usually the spine. By definition, the motion of twisting is to rotate the shoulders and spine in relation to the pelvis which stays neutral (sort of; I could post a whole thing on the hips in twists). In order to do that, you need to first lift up--make space--and exhale into it keeping the shoulder heads apart, as you twist. When you can no longer keep the long spine, heart lifted, broad chest thing happening, you've hit max. Don't push further. Notice the arms have nothing to do with any of that.

At that max, some people can comfortably tuck the elbow on the outside of the knee without sacrificing that twist and lifted chest.

Here’s some helpful stretches to help you reach your goal.

Tip:
1. Hamstring Stretch - Stay active by tuck img your tailbone, flexing your front foot and maintaining a flat spine. The object isn’t to fold over your front leg it’s to lengthen your hamstring.
2. Lizard - Remember to engage your legs rather than sinking your weight into your hips, use your strength to hold you.
3. Both Postures - Maintain square hip alignment by drawing the front leg hip back and back leg hip forward.

Shoulderstand revitalizes the body with inversion energy. The blood-flow is reversed, bringing relief to the feet and legs. This pose reduces fatigue and alleviates insomnia. Shoulderstand stretches the shoulders and neck and tones the legs and glutes. Be sure to relax the throat and jawline as you deepen the breath to receive the full calming effects of the pose.
